Mindful May 2017 The Mind-Body Connection We hear this term quite a lot these days, but do you know what it actually means? And do you know how it relates to Pilates? If you read either of Joseph Pilates books, he talks about the importance of the relationship of the mind to how the body not only moves, but also to health. The ultimate aim to attain health and wellbeing is to have neither dominate. “By recognizing the mental functions of the mind and the physical limitations of the body, complete coordination between mind and the body can be achieved” Jo Pilates If your mind dominates, it will either ignore your physical needs (no time, I don’t need to exercise) or push your body past it’s capability resulting in injury or issues. If your body dominates, you’ll have no control over what it does and be at the mercy of it, and then get a shock when it doesn’t do what you want it to!!! The mind-body connection is something you need to actually work on, it doesn’t just happen on it’s own. The MIND-BODY CONNECTION is the essence of Pilates. So take the time this month to develop your understanding of what it actually is, and your results will be fast tracked and your sense of calm and wellbeing will be heightened
