OXFORD YELLOW JACKETS
Class, Region: Class 6A, Region 7
Head Coach: Ryan Herring
2016 Record: 10-1
2016 Playoffs: Lost in First Round of the Class 6A playoffs at
home to Muscle Shoals 31-17.
2016 Rewind: After missing the playoffs in 2015, Oxford
rebounded in 2016 with a perfect 10-0 regular season (5th in
school history if you count 2007), before bowing out in the first
round of the playoffs in a disappointing loss to Muscle Shoals.
Key Losses: Oxford must replace its best player and team leader
LB Kenny Britt, who is now a true freshman at Auburn, as well as its
strongest player from 2016 in center Brett Houston.
Players to Watch: Junior OT Clay Webb
is up to 6’3, 330 lbs and has scholarship
offers from every school in the country. The
Yellow Jackets return a lot of firepower on
offense including QB Abe Peoples and RB
Titus Lindsey, who both had very productive
sophomore seasons. On defense, DL Matthew
Muncher, OLB’s Brody Syar and Cross Davis
and Safety Jordan Swain will lead another fast
and aggressive Oxford defense.
2017 Roundup: While Oxford will still be a
fairly young team in 2017, the Yellow Jackets
will be a much more experienced team, after
so many 9th &10th grade kids saw action last
season. Oxford coach Ryan Herring, who
enters his 5th season at Oxford, says he is
Brody Syer
very pleased with the way his players have
responded in the offseason. “I really like this
bunch of kids. They’ve worked very hard.
They’ve met all the challenges we gave them in
the offseason, spring training and the summer.
This is the best group of kids I’ve had since
I’ve been here. I’m excited to see how much we
can accomplish on the field this season.” The
schedule is top heavy this year, as the Yellow
Jackets will face perhaps their two toughest
opponents in the first two weeks of the season
in Hillcrest and Gadsden City. But the good
news is both games are home at Lamar Field.
Oxford also gets two tough region opponents
at home this year in Cullman in week 4 and
Pell City in week 9. The Yellow Jackets do have
to travel to Ben Russell in week 6.
Did You Know: Coach Herring is ecstatic to have assistant coach Chad
Cochran back on his staff to coach defensive line. Herring originally brought
Cochran with him to Oxford when he took the job, but Cochran has spent the
last two seasons coaching at Mountain Brook. Herring calls Cochran the best DL
coach he has ever been around.
