team. Our fans are excited about the season coming up after
the season we had last year, so it is important for us to be
competitive again this year.” Robertson also says that 2016 was
special, “Our community was just kind of waiting for us to be
good again. I am so proud of our community for sticking with
us. It was fun to see our stadium packed again for the Madison
Academy game. It is hard to put into words what last year’s
team did. It was a special group of seniors. Last year was a very
special year, right behind that state championship year.”
What about the future of both of these proud programs?
Martin states, “I want to be here long term. My initial concern
was that I was going to be fired if I lost, and they were scared
that I would leave if we won. We have a great administration
and I think the fans are comfortable now that I am not going
to leave after staying after going 12-2. We are building a new
fieldhouse this year and I like to think my wife and I are a part
of this community. I want to build a new legacy in Ohatchee
High School history.”
Robertson is obviously equally committed to Hokes Bluff. “We
have only had three head coaches since 1970. I am not going
anywhere. I plan on staying around. I got asked a lot during
the losing years when I was going to retire. I haven’t been asked
that a whole lot lately (laughing). My dad, his dad, my son, and
I all went to Hokes Bluff. Folks stay at Hokes Bluff. I love Hokes
Bluff and I want Hokes Bluff to win.”
