MUNFORD LIONS
Class, Region: Class 4A, Region 3 Head Coach: Bill Smith
2015 Record: 10-4 2015 Playoffs: Advanced to the Class 4A semi-finals before falling at state champion Leeds 48-20
2015 Rewind: For the second time in three years, the Munford Lions advanced to the Class 4A semi-finals. Last season Munford won eight straight at one point before falling to eventual state champion Leeds in the semis. The Lions had defeated the Green Wave in Week 3.
Key Losses: The most notable losses were at linebacker with the departure of Pigskin Roundup All-Star Austin Stephens and Austin Campbell. Running back Charles Smith is also gone, leaving another large hole to fill. The Lions also lost 3 of the 5 starting offensive linemen.
Players to Watch: It all begins with QB Avery Harris. The 5’ 11, 195 senior has great speed and threw for 48 TDs in 2015. He is one of the most prolific players in the state. Senior Center Jakari Robinson( 6’ 2, 300) is rapidly becoming one of the top line prospects in Alabama. Another rising star on defense is junior defensive end Tacorrie Russell( 6’ 3, 230). Russell is another college prospect and will play on offense this season at tight end and receiver.
2016 Roundup: The secondary and overall defense improved by leaps and bounds as the 2015 season progressed. Look
Avery Harris Quarterback
for that to continue in 2016. The secondary will be much improved with the return of safeties Greg Oden and Darren Parker and corner Kyle Ross. The defensive line promises to be the strength of the entire team with Russell at end, 300 lb Caelon Patton at noseguard, and linemen Jaylon Best and Dillon Campbell. Overall, with 5 starters back on offense and eight on defense and 75 players in the program, look for Munford to again be one of the elite teams in 4A football.
Did You Know? In each of the past three years Munford has been knocked out of the 4A playoffs with losses to the eventual state champion. The last two years Munford lost to Leeds in the quarters and semis respectively and in 2013 the Lions lost to Oneonta in the semis.
