Averaging more than 120 kids during spring and summer workouts, the Lions are expecting to build on recent success. They actually dressed 85 players during the spring jamboree. As far as the returning talent we’ll start out on the defense where the Lions return a leader in Austin Stephens, a three-year starter at middle linebacker. Linebacker C. J Foster, nose guard Greg Lawrence and defensive end Savion Gill bolster a strong front seven. On offense, Smith says he’s the deepest at quarterback since he’s been a head coach. Junior Avery Harris has the edge at quarterback although he’s followed closely by Austin Campbel and Tanner Reeves. Campbell and Harris started as defensive backs last season. Charles Smith, weighing in at 208 pounds, packs a punch at running back. James Jenkins (6’2” 180) and Tacorrie Russel (6’3” 205) are big threats at wide receiver and the line has three starters returning in Jakari Robinson, Bryer Bussie and Robert Carrothers. COACH BILL SMITH... “We’ve got more than 60 players that haven’t missed a workout all summer.” 56 | 2015 Pigskin Roundup the Magazine
