PIECES OF ME - JULY 2020 9 .
ELI No ! I should be dead !
He screams and rips a chunk of gauze , revealing a disgusting scar .
NURSE You need to calm down ! Your wounds haven ’ t healed !
Eli ignores her . Nothing will stop him ... Well , almost nothing ...
She removes a SYRINGE from a nearby cabinet and jabs it into his arm . Eli thrashes violently , but quickly calms ... not by choice .
After a beat , Eli ’ s still . His chest gently undulates with each breath .
DR . MORRIS ( O . S .) I see you have the patient sedated--
He steps inside the room . All eyes are on him , except Eli ’ s for obvious reasons .
NURSE Yes , doctor .
DR . MORRIS Very good . I ’ d hate for my work to go to waste .
He checks Eli ’ s chart and vitals .
ELI Who ... Who ’ s there ?
DR . MORRIS Good evening , Dr . Mento . I ’ m glad to see that you ’ re still with us , and that your electrolarynx is working properly . Usually , they ’ re handheld , but recent advancements have allowed for implantation . So some good news : you can speak .
( a beat ) I ’ m Dr . Morris , the head trauma surgeon , here at JFK . You ’ re lucky to be alive , just a few millimeters and you would ’ ve hit your brain .
