kindness
" In the meantime," Dad said firmly to all of us, " your grades are not to suffer because of this and you aren’ t to miss any classes." He had that look and we all knew he meant it. " Jane and I have talked to all your parents. They’ ve kindly agreed to allow you to help us. You’ ll never know how much we appreciate all of you, but we insist your school work doesn’ t suffer because you’ re spending time with us."
" Mr. Nelson, we wouldn’ t have it any other way, " Jody told him with a grin.
We came up with a plan for
what we called Friday Night Parties.
It was obvious that this time Mom spent with her special girls was the highlight of her days. She made sure Dad brought snacks for us and that she had her hair brushed and a little make-up on before we got there.
After five weeks of grueling physical therapy and hundreds of hospital meals, Mom was released from the hospital. As happy as Dad was to be getting Mom home, he was still apprehensive. This meant no doctors or nurses would be nearby to ask questions when they came up. Her care was up to him, but he wasn’ t alone.
The girls and I decided to continue with the same schedule we used while Mom was in the hospital. Dad was going back to work full-time at last. I would be living on campus again and there was a nurse Dad hired to take care of Mom during the days. The evenings were up to all of us.
