Hospice is to improve the quality of your wife’ s last days by offering comfort and dignity. We’ ll address all the symptoms of her cancer with a special emphasis on controlling her pain and discomfort.”
We all nodded. I spoke for all of us,“ We truly appreciate your help. Will the nurse be able to tell us what’ s going on with Mom and what we can expect as things change?”
Dad looked like he was about to break down. Shirley reached out and held his hand.“ Your nurse is going to be Sylvia. She’ s been with us for more than ten years and is one of our best. Earl, you and Jane met her the day you came to fill out the forms, remember?”
Dad said,“ Yes, I remember her. Jane really liked her, and thought she had a special touch when they shook hands. Thank you so much for assigning her to us.”
“ We know how difficult this is for all of you.” Shirley looked at me and smiled.“ It’ s our hope to make it easier for Jane, and all of you as well. Anytime you have questions just ask Sylvia and if she doesn’ t know the answer, she’ ll get in touch with Dr. James or us and we’ ll find out the information you need.”
We left the offices that day with a mixture of sadness and hope. We knew what to expect in the coming weeks, and we also knew Mom was going to need all of us to be strong. We were hopeful that Sylvia could help us do that for Mom.
