If Not ForYou
if I didn’ t live with my grandparents for awhile. Grandad didn’ t like the idea, but he agreed I could go visit them for a couple weeks.
After riding for two hours on the hot, sweaty bus Mr. and Mrs. Newman picked me up at the bus station. Mrs. Newman immediately hugged me tight. I felt so safe and loved in that minute I finally cried the tears I’ d been holding in for months. " Oh Sarah Jean," she sighed, " sweetheart, we’ ve missed you so much."
" I’ ve missed you too," I said. " I wish I could live here with you. Grammy and Grandad are nice enough to me but I don’ t think they love me."
" Sarah Jean, don’ t you say such things," Mrs. Newman said. " I know for a fact that your grandparents love you. Now let’ s just put aside all that foolishness and have a nice time while you’ re here. Bob and I have some fun things planned for you."
Those two weeks flew by. We went to the county fair, and to the new mall in Iowa City. I helped Mr. Newman mow the grass and Mrs. Newman and I tried out some new recipes. Every night at 9:00 there was ice cream. It was a very special time. By the end of the last week I was feeling a lot better about everything.
The night before I was supposed to leave, Mrs. Newman took my hand and said they wanted to take me somewhere. We walked out the front door and headed to the house Mom and I used to live in. I started to cry a little. I hadn’ t been back there since the day Mom died.
