NOVODEVICHY
CONVENT
The enormous Novodevichy Convent is so special to Moscow that it was deemed a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. This enormous fortress, filled with cathedrals, churches, and residences, was
started in the 1500s
and has remained intact
since the 17th century.
Smolensk Cathedral
is the oldest and most
imposing structure in
the Convent, with great
silver and golden domes
on the outside and 16thcentury frescoes on the
inside. These castle walls
are magical any time
of year, surrounded by
green pastures in the
summer and slopes of
snow in the winter.
