EDITOR’ S LETTER

The
10th anniversary of the US Open Pickleball Championships is more than just a calendar milestone; it’ s a testament to how a“ backyard pastime” became a national movement. Our cover story reflects on this decade of explosive growth— a journey from modest sidecourt gathering to a high-octane, festival-style showcase known universally as the“ Biggest Pickleball Party in the World.”
That same competitive evolution was on full display in April at Pickleball Slam 4 on ESPN, further cementing the sport’ s place in the mainstream media landscape. With $ 1 million on the line, the intensity was unmatched as tennis legends Andre Agassi and James Blake faced off against world No. 1 Anna Leigh Waters and Genie Bouchard. Agassi and Blake ultimately secured the victory, but the real winner was the sport itself. The Slam proved that pickleball at this level is as intense and demanding as any sport on television.
Beyond the tournament brackets, pickleball is making a profound impact in the health and wellness space. We are seeing incredible results from programs specifically designed for individuals living with Parkinson’ s disease. The sport’ s unique rhythm and social nature offer more than just physical exercise; they provide cognitive benefits and a vital sense of connection. Matthew Schwartz’ s piece“ Rallying Against Parkinson’ s” on page 46 explores these initiatives that prove pickleball’ s rise isn’ t just about rankings— it’ s about quality of life.
Finally, I am pleased to welcome Glenn Jordan to the Pickleball Magazine family as our new“ Rules Ref” columnist. Glenn brings 38 years of sportswriting experience, paired with his expertise as a senior pro and certified USA Pickleball referee. If you have a rules question that needs a definitive answer, send it to rules @ pickleballmagazine. com. Glenn might just settle your next courtside dispute in an upcoming column.
Stay swinging,
