The more you put into the game, the more you will gain in return. That goes back to deserving to win, but it is also practical. If you want to have a strong mental game, practice building a strong sport.
Older players need to show up in order to get an 85- plus category. Young players need to get their schools on board. You learn to be a winner.
This is good practice for the mental game. Persuade others to see you as a winner— people who give back are winners.
When you mail in your dues, don’ t ask,“ What do I get for my money?” Instead, feel good about supporting your sport.
At the USSP Nationals held at Pictona, I saw lots of hardworking employees making sure matches got played despite the rain. There were lots of winners there because the seniors want good tournaments.
There are plenty of sports psychologists and good books to help improve your mental game. If you are looking for good experiences, pickleball is ready for you. What you put into it is the key to what you are going to get out of it.
If you are willing to try things and invent, willing to learn, willing to practice, and willing to share a partnership, you are already winning the mental game. Bend those knees. •
Alice Tym was ranked 13th in the world for tennis in the‘ 60s. She’ s been named USPTA Coach of the Year and is a USPTA Master Professional.
