By MARLON SCHULMAN and KAREN MITCHELL
The sport ’ s two longest-standing international governing bodies , the International Pickleball Federation ( IPF ) and World Pickleball Federation ( WPF ), have announced plans to merge , creating a unified governing body for one of the world ’ s fastestgrowing sports . This historic step marks a major milestone after previous attempts to unify all governing organizations faced setbacks .
The merger reflects a shared vision for the sport ’ s future and signals a commitment to unity and progress . “ This merger is about more than just organizations — it ’ s about bringing the global pickleball family together ,” said leaders from both federations . The timing is especially significant , as 2025 will celebrate the 60th anniversary of pickleball ’ s invention on Bainbridge Island , Washington , alongside key events like the 10th anniversary of the Bainbridge Cup and the inaugural World Pickleball Games .
The next step will be a joint Annual General Meeting , where members will vote on finalizing the merger and appointing a new Board of Directors . This transparent , inclusive approach ensures that the pickleball community remains at the heart of this pivotal moment .
Toward a Unified Future
This merger streamlines global governance , strengthens the international pickleball community , and enhances the sport ’ s profile worldwide . For players , fans and administrators , it ’ s an exciting step toward a more unified and dynamic future . The unified organization also invites the Global Pickleball Federation to consider further consolidation . •
Unification Plan : A Balanced and Inclusive Approach
The merged organization will initiate under the World Pickleball Federation name , with the IPF ’ s guiding motto of “ No Country Left Behind .” Both federations will have equal input , and all member countries will be welcomed into the new structure . National bodies will be encouraged to resolve any existing differences and clarify National Governing Body positions . The unified federation will stand ready to assist .
A Transition Board , with two representatives from each federation and guided by an experienced , independent advisor from the International Olympic Committee , will oversee the merger process .
