Last year , Pickleball Magazine editorial director Julie Talerico got an email from award-winning Hollywood filmmaker Daniel Ostroff , who had just begun filming a powerful documentary about Roger
BelAir , a retired banking executive who travels the country teaching pickleball in prisons and jails . Since then , Roger and Daniel have kept Julie in the loop with extraordinary stories of how the sport is having an immeasurable impact on the prison community .
Filming of the documentary “ Pickleball in Prison™ ” is almost wrapped , and Daniel and his team are working on post-production . Check out Steve Kettmann ’ s inspiring story , “ Pickleball Breaks Out in Prisons ,” on page 28 .
Only two players in pickleball ’ s 60-year history have developed a shot so unique , so difficult and so bold that the sport has established shots named for them . In their first interviews in years , longtime friends Erne Perry , who the Erne shot is named after , and Timothy Nelson , whose namesake is the Nasty Nelson , spoke at length with contributing writer Matthew Schwartz .
