Welcome to the May / June issue of Pickleball Magazine . More than 3,200 participants from 31 countries and
50,000 visitors filled East Naples Community Park for the 2024 Minto US Open Pickleball Championships .
Anna Leigh Waters and JW Johnson dominated , winning two gold medals each , including as a team in mixed doubles . JW also took gold with partner Dylan Frazier in men ’ s doubles . Anna Leigh and her mom Leigh Waters , who suffered a torn ACL in late 2022 , took gold in women ’ s doubles — this was their first major event back together on the court .
The US Open , along with the USA Pickleball National Championships , is the most prestigious tournament in the sport , and I ’ d like to pay tribute to co-founders Terri Graham and her life partner , Chris Evon . Over the years , Terri and Chris , the visionaries behind “ The Biggest Pickleball Party in the World™ ,” continued to grow this electrifying one-of-a-kind event that elevated the sport and welcomed players of all ages and abilities from across the globe .
After nearly a decade , Terri and Chris are placing their “ pickleball baby ” in the capable hands of Pickle4 , owner of The Pickler and Pickleball Den . Mike Dee , CEO of Pickle4 , says , “ These two women are a rare combination of trailblazers , start-up mavens , and for sure first-ballot Hall of Famers in the world of pickleball . What they have accomplished in under a decade is truly extraordinary . All of us involved in this great game sit on their shoulders as we move forward .”
On a more personal note , Terri was also instrumental in the founding of Pickleball Magazine . One day , in the summer of 2015 , Terri called and was the first person to suggest I start a magazine for pickleball . In 2016 , Pickleball Magazine was born . Thank you , Terri , for your help with this vision . See you on the courts .
