My wife Lisa and I grew up in the ’ 80s playing competitive tennis in college , and for us , and tennis players around the world , Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf were our heroes — icons of the sport — and we wanted to play like them . It ’ s wonderful to have this legendary couple embrace the sport of pickleball . As with all former tennis champions , the transition from one court to the next takes some getting used to , and it was no different for Graf , who possessed perhaps the greatest forehand ever in women ’ s tennis . “ I tend to want to keep my feet moving . That ’ s what I learned in tennis ,” she says . “ My mind knows what I should be doing , but my body is not quite ready to let that tennis mind go . I have a bit of a hard time getting back into that competitive mode . I want to enjoy it . I love the challenge of it … but I also don ’ t want to get too competitive .”
Agassi said recently , “ As long as I can walk , I will be playing pickleball .” In February , after he and Steffi won the million-dollar purse at Pickleball Slam 2 , Andre said , “ This is such a great event with everyone coming out to support it . This is so good for the game of pickleball , and it ’ s been a thrill to be on the court with Steffi .”
Don ’ t miss our story of another sports great — Danny Wuerffel . Two years ago , a friend introduced the University of Florida Gator great and Heisman Trophy winner to pickleball . Wuerffel just recently won gold at the 5.0 level ( 35 +) in mixed doubles and bronze at men ’ s 5.0 ( 35 +). No lessons . Wuerffel , a former NFL quarterback for the New Orleans Saints , Green Bay Packers , Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins , says , “ Pickleball might be my favorite sport that I have ever played . There has never been a sport so easy and also challenging .”
