THE SWING ON THE RETURN SHOULD BE KEPT VERY SHORT AND COMPACT . next shot . So , slow it down and aim deeper for better returns .
Leaning In and Forward Momentum
The last thing to work on with the return of serve is properly leaning into the ball when you strike it . By having a forward lean at the time of impact , your body momentum will continue forward after you strike the ball , thus allowing you to work your way up to the nonvolley line faster . If you can make it to the non-volley line before the serving team hits their next shot , you ’ ll be in good position to control the point .
Where to Hit the Return
The goal is to place the return of serve back fairly deep toward the middle of your opponents ’ court . Unless you ’ re playing in a tournament where one opponent is significantly stronger or weaker than their partner , it ’ s important to practice consistently returning deep to the center of the court . It greatly increases your focus and thus your odds of getting the return in … plus it creates confusion for your opponents when you hit the ball between them .
So , to sum it up , hold a continental grip , stand a foot behind the baseline , take your paddle back parallel to your waist as soon as you see where the serve is heading , square up to the ball , lean in and punch the return deep to the center of the server ’ s court . Make sure that your momentum carries you forward after you hit the ball so that you can quickly make your way up to the nonvolley line before the serving team hits their next shot . Remember : keep it smooth , compact , and consistent . •
