Fluorescent tape on the lines and pink balls made it possible for Allison Wright and Austin Tripp to play pickleball using regular rules . The black lights make the ball appear to streak in the photograph , but players quickly adapted by watching the ball closely . Photo by Alice Tym .

In Tennessee , the Chattanooga Department of Parks and Outdoors , along with One Chattanooga , purchased 14 black lights at $ 475 each and sponsored a series of free pickleball events at local recreation centers .

Play was reservation-only , in one-hour intervals . Each person who booked a court was responsible for getting four players to play by regular pickleball rules . One evening was devoted to families ; the other days were for adults . Time slots filled up quickly and there was an extensive wait list .
Coordinator Kelly Price provided paddles for those families who decided to try pickleball and have some fun . Music was optional at the events , but either way there was a party atmosphere .
Patsy Duncan said the main reason she tried blacklight pickleball was for the camaraderie : “ We laughed ourselves silly . It is hilarious and I ’ ll be back again .” Several players found it “ challenging .” Paige Rann added , “ It ’ s fun because it adds an element to the normal play .” Dalton , Georgia ’ s Vicki Pippin laughed and said in her deep southern accent , “ Black lit — just can ’ t hit .” •
