The Tennis and Pickleball Club at Newport Beach wanted to plan for the most common serious medical emergencies that may occur on the courts . The goal was to ensure member safety , especially since so many players are older and more likely to suffer serious injuries .
Common court emergencies include cardiac issues , heat-related illness , broken bones , diabetic challenges and head trauma from falling . The club ’ s goal , according to Rolfes , was to deploy a manageable suite of resources and training so the members would have a safer experience when the inevitable occurred . While nothing substitutes for calling 911 , the club wanted to go a step further . It purchased the following : A Wheelchair – So many injuries on the court involve soft tissue and broken bones . A wheelchair allows a player to move safely off the court and to a vehicle for transportation . Especially on cold and hot days , this provides much-needed comfort .
First Aid Kits – The club bought two separate first aid kits . One is for the pro shop , containing Band- Aids and common first aid gear for minor issues . The other is in a backpack and easily carried to a court to treat more serious injuries . Contents include bandages , splints , wraps , and diabetic and heat illness treatments such as electrolyte drinks and glucose tablets . The club also keeps flexible ice packs in the pro shop freezer .
An Automated External Defibrillator ( AED ) – The club purchased a Philips HeartStart AED from a reliable online source . The chosen model has common features such as simple operation and audio instructions that allow someone with no training to use it . AED prices range from $ 1,200 to $ 1,600 . The club ’ s device is housed in a weatherresistant case , mounted on an outside wall and accessible 24 / 7 .
AEDs are just like the defibrillators found in hospitals but they ’ re portable , inexpensive , and simple enough to be used by someone with no training . When the pads are placed on a victim , the machine evaluates the person ’ s condition and instructs the user through clear verbal commands . It will only deliver shock to the victim if needed . It will also provide instruction on when to administer CPR , which , while not required , is optimally used in conjunction with AEDs . •
