and is therefore NOT my recommendation at this time . Instead , an early approach to an acute lateral ankle sprain is to rest as needed , elevate the leg in order to avoid fluid buildup , active motion as tolerated ( ankle pumps , gentle circles ), and gentle resistance band exercises as tolerated .
The combination of gentle exercise , rest , and elevation is the best strategy in order to quickly promote blood supply to the injury site , while decreasing swelling and promoting healing . Following the acute phase of the injury , weight bearing as tolerated , progressive strengthening and balance exercises combined with manual therapy are required in order to return to full participation in sports .
Please note that if the injury is severe enough , immobilization in a walking boot may be necessary , however this usually does not apply to common ankle sprains . If you are injured and unsure of how to proceed , please consult a healthcare professional . I would highly suggest consulting a sports physical therapist as someone who will have the best knowledge to help you recover faster and get back to playing .
As mentioned earlier , it is important to assess the entire kinetic chain to ensure that there are no asymmetries and muscle imbalances that can lead to chronic ankle problems . This can be addressed with an individualized program based on your own impairments . Once again , consulting a knowledgeable sports physical therapist can be a game changer for your physical health and ability to participate in this sport we all love .
