PUBLISHER’S PLAYBOOK I ’d like to start by wishing Barney McCallum a very happy 93rd Birthday! As many of you know, Barney is one of the game’s founders. What would we be doing for fun without him—without pickleball? Our Around the Post friends Alex Hamner and Jennifer Lucore sat down with Barney, who is also a WWII veteran. Be sure to read the article about him on page 20. A Publication of Dollard Publishing Co., Inc. 11 Mayview Road, Canonsburg, PA 15317 www.thepickleballmag.com PUBLISHER Wayne Dollard We’ve dedicated part of this issue to our Veterans—the brave men and women who’ve served and are still serving our country. Pickleball is growing in the VA communities around the country, and has proven to be exceptionally good for the body, mind and soul. There was plenty of exciting play at the Tournament of Champions. Along with the Nationals and the US Open, the T.O.C. is one of the Big-Three events. Ben Johns walked away with the Triple Crown—winning pro singles, pro doubles and mixed. At the same time, mother-daughter team Leigh and Anna Leigh Waters are making their mark on the tournament circuit. They won gold in women’s pro doubles. Read more about the Tournament of Champions on page 38. Changes and growth are constantly happening in the pickleball world. We’re anxious to see and be a part of what comes next. Feel free to reach out to us any time and let us know how we can serve the pickleball community better. See you at Nationals in November! MAIL CALL! Great article on ratings and aging in the July/August 2019 issue of Pickleball Magazine. Alice Tym expressed the situation clearly and succinctly. Super job! Diane Keller Really enjoyed Alice Tym’s article “Ratings Reality Check.” She hit every point I’ve agreed with for the past few years. As I’m approaching 75, I can definitely say I don’t want to compete against the younger players. Thanks for putting it in writing so real seniors know they have a pickler championing their cause. Bonnie Dandrea Aging isn’t for sissies. Once we reach 70, we become aware of all the changes internally in our bodies—like having to rest more in between play days, not having the energy to play long points, and hurting every morning when you get out of bed, to name a few. I agree with Alice Tym’s article, “Ratings Reality Check”—we need a ranking system after 75 (although I’d prefer it over 70). Originally, our initial meetings for a Super Senior Circuit began as age only, but morphed into age/skill, thereby diluting already shrinking age groups. Tennis is age only; so is marathoning and triathloning. You’re ranked in your age group in those sports—why not pickleball?
