A
lot of people ask me what
it’s like being the USAPA
Board President. While
there isn’t a single “best”
answer, one of the most enjoyable
parts of the job is meeting people
of all backgrounds and nationalities
and finding out how they came to
discover pickleball.
A majority of players come to play
pickleball by word of mouth. Other
reasons include health and physical
fitness, ease of learning the sport
and how fun it is to play. My follow-
up question is usually whether or
not they’re a USAPA member and
why. The answers usually fall into
two categories—people who want
to support the national governing
body of the sport because they’re
dedicated to seeing the sport grow,
and people who enjoy the many
benefits associated with being a
member.
Many say membership growth
is due to more tournament play,
however, many recreational players
are joining for the benefits.
