The paddle companies set up their tents among
those belonging to families and state groups.
Players gather in their special places. For example,
Tennessee had the big tree behind its welcome tent.
You know where to find people, and each group
gathers to support each other, supply food and
drinks in massive rolling coolers, and make evening
dinner plans after play. The Open is a pickleball
family fiesta.
This year the Brazilians came to play and learn
how to run tournaments. Young Argentinian tennis
players made a good showing and are ready to start
pickleball in South America. The South Koreans
were back, giving away t-shirts and joining in the
fun near the vendor tents. The Quebecois were
present in full force, and explained how they’re
having very successful league play. The Brits were
back, with young players—Europe is showing us
that pickleball is not just a senior sport. We are
meeting the challenge with Anna Leigh Waters and
William Sobek, two young US players to watch. The
Pennsylvania players were cheering for each other.
The New Yorkers met for dinner. The St. Louis group
