Pickleball Paddle
W
est Des Moines, Iowa, is now home to the
Guinness World Records-certified largest
pickleball paddle on the globe. Affectionately
known as “Big Blue,” the massive paddle was created by
pickleball entertainment venue Smash Park, and was
celebrated during National Pickleball Month in April.
“When my husband and I created the vision for Smash
Park, we wanted to put the Des Moines area on the
map as a pickleball and entertainment destination,”
says Kerri Lockyear, Vice President and co-owner of
Smash Park with husband Monty. “We are committed to
making a big impact, and I guess we’re achieving it both
figuratively and literally. Big Blue provides another great
opportunity to draw attention to the fun and growing
sport of pickleball, which people in central Iowa are
really embracing.”
Measuring 13’6” high and 6’9” wide, Big Blue is more
than 10 times the size of a traditional paddle, and was
created in conjunction with Paddletek.
During the entire month of April, visitors enjoyed Big
Blue-themed food and drink specials along with the
Big Blue Food Challenge featuring a five-pound Italian
sandwich.
Big Blue was also recognized during a ribbon cutting
event with West Des Moines officials on April 12, and
a local celebrity pickleball challenge on April 14, with
a portion of the day’s sales donated to Children and
Families of Iowa. •
