Irina Tereschenko won gold with Lucy
Kovalova in Women’s Doubles Open.
Kovalova defeated Tereschenko in the
Women’s Open Singles finals.
Women’s Doubles Open, she and Tereschenko defeated
Jardim-Carr, 11-8, 11-8. She defeated Tereschenko 11-
4, 9-11, 11-8 in Open Singles. Kovalova and Tereschenko
also took a silver medal in the Women’s Skill/Age
Doubles, bested in three straight sets by Catherine
Parenteau and Leigh Waters, 11-3, 14-12, 17-15.
McGuffin went home with five medals—some of
his more prestigious wins including Men’s Open
Singles and Men’s 19+ Singles. Spectators described
McGuffin’s performance as “on fire” for the first three
days of the tournament. His Open Singles victory at the
tournament’s finale was just icing on the cake for the
week.
McGuffin took the gold from Tyler Loong, 11-2, 3-11,
11-7, in what spectators described as some of the best
pickleball they’d ever witnessed.
McGuffin earned several more medals. He and his
partner, Matt Goebel, won gold in the Men’s Skill /
Age Doubles, defeating Wesley Gabrielsen and Morgan
Evans, 11-5, 11-9. In Men’s Skill/Age Singles, he
defeated Daniel Moore, 11-2, 12-10. He took silver in the
Mixed Skill/Age Doubles with partner Sarah Ansboury,
losing out to Jardim and Gabrielsen, 11-3, 14-12. His
bronze came from the Mixed Doubles Open, where he
also played with Ansboury.
In the Men’s Doubles Open, Kyle Yates and Ben Johns
defeated Matt Wright and Dave Weinbach, 8-11, 13-11,
11-2, 15-6, in front of a sellout crowd.
The junior talent pool was also impressive this year,
with William Sobek, Kyle Stoddard and Junior Mint
Munro, all getting gold for the Junior Boys Singles,
1-14, 15-16, and 17-18, respectively. Layla Jimenez was
the Girls Singles champion. A Juniors party later in the
week gave the younger players a chance to play against
pros for bragging rights.
Competition in the 50+ events was tighter than ever.
Cammy MacGregor won the Women’s Senior Singles,
and Scott Moore won the gold on the men’s side.
Most of the action coming out of Indian Wells was
captured by media partner ESPN3, ESPN’s streaming
channel that specializes in bringing sports with a global
interest to U.S. audiences. It was the first time pickleball
was featured on the same channel that brings the World
Cup and the Le Mans to the U.S. market, and matches will
be available on ESPN3 on VOD until November of 2019.
