Pickleball’s reach is unrivaled.
hen my wife, Irina, and I arrived on the island of Bali,
Indonesia, I had three equally glorious goals: eat
breakfast, find an authentic Balinese experience,
and—most importantly—locate a pickleball court.
After arriving at Nusa Due Hotel and Spa, we ventured onto the
local tennis courts in search of play. It was only after we started
drawing pickleball lines on the court that curiosity overtook two
tennis pros who approached us—and they were instantly engaged.
“It’s simple: just don’t stand in the kitchen,” I said. The next day,
the typically unused tennis courts began to look like a Who's Who
of the World’s Fair. We had a couple from New Zealand dinking
against a couple from the Netherlands, and the competition
between couples from France and Germany was energizing!
Without exception, all of our new international friends left with
the same sentiments—“Where can we buy paddles?” and “Should
we get Franklin balls or Onyx?”
Toward the end of our stay,
the resort’s management
asked us what the commotion
was on the tennis courts. I
can only hope our experience
there will lead to a
destination tournament.
In my travels I’ve found—
regardless of age, gender
or ethnicity—pickleball is
enjoyed by all, and its reach
