Consistency
Try to limit your choice of shots in a tournament to ones
you can make almost all the time. Pickleball is all about
percentages. Get the ball over the net and on the court.
Let the other team make the mistakes, and be a partner
who can be relied on.
Find someone who complements
your skill set
Sometimes you may think that you want a partner with a
similar playing style. However, many successful teams
have contrasting playing styles. If you like to hit the ball
soft, you may benefit from having a partner who hits
hard and vice versa.
Know when NOT to hit the ball
Try to be a team player. We all love to hit balls, but
sometimes it’s better to let your partner take the shot. If
your partner is ready to make a put away with his or her
forehand, don’t reach out and get there first with your
backhand. Instead, say “you” and move out the way!
Difficult partnerships
When you play with a significant other or good friend, it
can put a lot of strain on your relationship. When you’re
comfortable with someone, you’re more likely to say,
“Why are you taking my forehand with your backhand”
rather than “nice shot,” which you might have said to a
less familiar partner. It’s important to stay positive and
have fun!
Let’s not forget that pickleball is so much fun, and
we’re all addicted. Embrace your partner’s style,
especially if it’s different than yours. Contrasting styles
can often make
really good
teams. I hope
this helps you
improve your
doubles game
and become a
better doubles
partner. •
