Tyson McGuffin won gold
in the Men’s Open Pro Singles.
center court, the mixed doubles pro finalists came
out to compete before an energized, sold-out crowd.
Simone Jardim and Kyle Yates paired up against Lucy
Kovalova and Matt Wright. The match featured four
players at the top of their games. There was no holding
back in the three-set nailbiter as all players took turns
smashing volleys and overheads at each other. In the
end, Jardim and Yates walked away with the gold.
Jardim had less than 15 minutes to rest before she
had to play again in the women’s final against Irina
Tereschenko and Lucy Kovalova. Continuing their
winning ways, Jardim and partner, Corrinne Carr,
won a straight-set conclusive final. The victory gave
Jadim back-to-back US Open Triple Crown wins (pro
singles, doubles, and mixed in 2017 and 2018).
The final event to close out the 2018 Minto US
Open Pickleball Championships was the men’s pro
doubles featuring Matt Wright and Kyle Yates versus
Dave Weinbach and Marcin Rozpedski. The dynamic
was fascinating since Yates and Weinbach had
partnered together for most of 2017, earning the US
Open and National Championship titles as partners.
The final was a dominant performace by Wright
and Yates as they took down two of the best-ever
pickleballers with relative ease. The win gave Yates
two of the three pro US Open pro titles—only losing
the singles to Tyson McGuffin in the finals.
Simone Jardim walked away as the big Triple
Crown winner for the second consecutive year—
reafirming her top-of-the-class status in the women’s
game. Scott Moore was also recognized as the
pickleball authority in the senior pro game, earning the
triple crown in the 2018 Senior US Open events. Moore
won the senior pro singles, doubles (with Steven Cole)
and mixed (with Lisa Naumu).
The people who win the
Triple Crown
are people who don’t ever lose
throughout the week.
