As the sport continues to grow , public and private parks are adding courts to keep up with the demand for play , but it is often resulting in noise complaints from nearby residents .
Carl Schmits , managing director of equipment standards and facilities development for USA Pickleball , and Bob Unetich , engineer and owner of Pickleball Sound Mitigation , weigh in on this important topic in “ Sound Effects ” on page 14 . They explain that the irritation surrounding pickleball ’ s characteristic sound stems from the tone and pitch and how often the sound is heard . The court size in pickleball enables the frequent striking of the ball , and the placement of multiple courts in a relatively small area .
According to Schmits and Unetich , progress has been made by manufacturers to produce quieter paddles , balls , and other pickleball equipment , and USA Pickleball has been collaborating with these suppliers over the last 15 months to conduct more research on this topic . As the national governing body of the sport , USA Pickleball establishes the standards for both paddles and balls and has announced a new set of standards that will provide the potential for quieter play while maintaining the feel of play . Paddles with a softer surface , thicker cores , and damping of vibration will be both quieter and lower the audio pitch an octave or two . USA Pickleball ’ s Quiet Category will include equipment that is approximately 50 percent quieter than the current equipment being used , which will benefit communities and enable the continued growth of pickleball .
