Pickleball England Gains Sport England Recognition

Pickleball England ( PbE ) has reached a major milestone — official recognition by Sport England as the National Governing Body for pickleball in the country . This achievement marks a significant step forward for the sport , which continues to grow in popularity across the U . K .
Founded in January 2019 , PbE began the process of seeking Sport England recognition in June 2021 . After securing pre-approval in February 2022 , the organization worked diligently to meet the required policies and procedures for full application submission in April 2023 .
However , PbE faced an unexpected hurdle when the Lawn Tennis Association expressed interest in incorporating pickleball as a discipline of tennis . This development led to delays in the Sport England Board of Directors reviewing PbE ’ s application , pushing the decision to late 2024 .
During this delay , PbE mobilized a strong campaign to reinforce its role as the governing body for pickleball .
Clubs , partners , and supporters engaged in advocacy efforts ; media coverage increased ; and even the sports minister was questioned in the House of Commons . These efforts solidified PbE ’ s position , demonstrating the organization ’ s commitment to promoting and governing the sport independently .
The long-awaited approval letter , received on Dec . 16 , was the perfect Christmas gift for the pickleball community . The recognition was made even more special by the simultaneous approval of PbE ’ s sister organization in Scotland , Sportscotland .
Sport England ’ s announcement highlighted the rapid growth of pickleball and PbE ’ s governance capabilities . With official recognition now secured , PbE is poised to expand opportunities for players nationwide , ensuring pickleball ’ s continued rise as an inclusive and accessible sport in England . •
