So , how does a player get unstuck ? “ I think continuing to believe in yourself , and hard work is the key ,” says Garnett . “ Not doing the same things that aren ’ t working .”
To access more joy , stop continually criticizing yourself when a point , game or match doesn ’ t go your way . This does nothing but perpetuate your misery , and it manifests in your body language and causes physical tension . In addition , if you hammer on yourself during a game , you ’ re doing a disservice to your ability to play in the moment .
To counter your negative self-talk , replace it with a positive affirmation . “ Affirmations are a great way to stay focused ,” explains Garnett .
Affirmations need to be repeated often in order to replace the negative links our neurons have formed . And the good news is that it has been scientifically proven that our neurons can be rewired . But be patient — it takes time .
You also want to be aware of negative body language , and how it speaks to your partner . When in doubt , smile .
“ I had the pleasure of having dinner with the legendary tennis coach Vic Braden ,” says Ge . “ He said to smile on the court , and I have always let that statement grow with me on my journey .”
Vich adds another layer to our understanding of joy , and that is to practice gratitude . “ I really appreciate
the community that has grown behind me , and the sport ,” he says . “ I maintain the joy because it is not every day you have the chance to play a sport for a living .”
And you don ’ t have to play pickleball for a living to start celebrating the small victories because they will help fuel your joy . Maybe you lost a match to a stronger team , but you took one game 11-3 . Feel good about that and use it as a building block to your future , confident self .
Finally , one of the most important things you can add to your Joy Diet is mindfulness . “ Mindfulness has been key for me ,” says Garnett . “ I meditate and journal every morning .”
Ge makes meditation a part of his daily routine as well and says , “ I also practice visualization , dedicating time to play points and patterns out in my head .”
The Rolling Stones ’ Mick Jagger is a practitioner of meditation , and he would probably tell you to stop being your own beast of burden . Be less serious , breathe , and find more joy . •
