The past few months in the world of pickleball have been especially exciting , culminating with the National Championships in Casa Grande , AZ , over nine days in November . The competition was like nothing I ’ ve seen before , as more and more skilled racquet sports players make the transition to pickleball . The trend is similar to what happened with platform tennis when its popularity exploded , and I ’ m confident that pickleball ’ s growth and popularity will follow the same trajectory .
Featured on the cover is Marcin Rozpedski – a former Davis Cup tennis player for Poland – who won his second consecutive National Open Singles Title . From the women , we witnessed Irina Tereschenko and Lucia Kovalova emerging as superstars – while youthful veterans such as Simone Jardim , Corrine Carr , Christine McGrath , and Sarah Ansboury continue to excel and earn gold medals at the top level . Seeing top tennis talent on the courts like this is a welcome sight to those who work so hard behind the scenes to grow this sport year after year , as well as a treat for the fans .
And then there ’ s Andy Roddick . It was a nice surprise to hear that he wanted to work with pickleball to help raise money for the Andy Roddick Foundation , which helps ensure that youth in low-income communities can reach their full potential . You can read more about Roddick and his foundation on page 14 of this magazine . You can also watch a clip of him playing – provided by The Pickleball Channel .
