Dear Readers, For over 25 years, POR has been a go-to resource for physicians, practice owners and buyers when they are in the market for diagnostics, devices, ancillary services and medical equipment. Working with both entrenched market leaders and innovative start-ups, we have seen medical device and equipment technology advance these tools from large, highly complex systems, to bench- and desk-top Waived tools, to connected, handheld devices. The pace of change has accelerated considerably in recent years; the strengthening of “the cloud” and the enormous processing power of today’s computers, tablets and smartphones have us poised at the forefront of a new era of connected mobile diagnostics. Part of the Mobile Health (or #mHealth if you’re a Twitterophile) category – a broad category inclusive of everything from consumer tools like fitness, gait and calorie counters, to FDA-cleared iPhone-centered diagnostic companion tools – the once-nascent connected mobile diagnostics sector is starting to reach adolescence. Innovations are being proven in trials, the first FDA-cleared smartphone-based therapies are entering the market and payers are beginning to reimburse for a host of mHealth services. For these reasons, POR will now begin to provide brief synopses of clinically-relevant mobile diagnostics and devices in a new section called Mobile Health Update. See page xx for the first installment.
