In Cormac McCarthy's The Road, the man and the boy's father-son relationship alters their perception of the situation they are living in because it gives them hope, allows them to remain good, to escape from reality with each other, and to give each other the strength they need to live. Ultimately, this realtionship helps them to survive the world in which they are forced to live.
