Philo January 2016

Mission Statement

An aspiring non-profit organization promoting good by using collective social energy and digital media.

We strive to unite social justice agencies with businesses in an effort to cultivate employees with a more acute awareness of pressing humanitarian issues; to build stronger communities by promoting ethical business practice and product consumption amongst residents; to assess businesses needs and pair them with social justice agencies capable of filling any empty niches; to bring awareness to humanitarian issues and diversity using the power of digital mediums; to promote Film, Social Justice, and Latin Issues

A business agrees to commit to Philo’s program, which will connect it with four social justice agencies, including Philo itself. In one year, four days will be set aside for public educational conferences, each day belonging to one social justice agency. Three agencies bring their local topics, while the fourth, Philo’s Focus , is an annually elected theme that will generally deal with more international issues. Philo uniquely combines academic inquiry with digital mediums to relay one context to the next. In the four acadmeic conferences the business's employees and the public will establish a critical and applied understanding of each topic.

Philo's Focus

Philo’s board of directors elects an annual theme to research and bring awareness to through digital mediums and academic inquiry. 2016 will be dedicated to the international migration/ refugee crises.

This year we are preparing aid boxes for migrants, refugees and displaced people, that include basic necessities and a disposable camera. The intent is to provide those affected a tool to record their experience. We encourage those receiving the boxes to send us back their pictures by including a prepaid package, with a return stamp and multi-lingual instructions. This allows Philo to bring awareness to the issue in a uniquely personal way. So far, boxes are going to Peru and Puerto Rico.

Using the ubiquity of the web, Philo aims to provide a digital landscape where visitors can access information about the movement, social causes and local businesses that have committed to the Philo model. In addition, using the web as a home base allows for us to create an ecclectic point for gathering social justice information. With an array of instruments to produce content ranging from artists to links.
