Gringo ( PG ) ***

Snatched !

Ahead of their time . Right on the mark are the writers of Gringo for concocting a dynamic tale fit for the times . Catch this zesty thriller from VVS Films at various Cineplex cites throughout B . C .
Originality has gone by the boards in Hollywood in recent years . Taking a page out of the Guy Ritchie Snatched playbook , Gringo comes across as a true breath of fresh air . Windy Chicago is where our story takes off . Straight as an arrow Daniel Oyelowo plays the perfect fish out of water Harold Soyinka . Total blinders obscure this happily married guy to Thandie Newton whose boss Joel Edgerton runs the company and continues to promise his best employee all good things and a bright future . Alas , looks and appearances can be deceiving
Shenanigans galore find a pleasant home at this corporate workplace . Figure in hoods , guns , medics , double and trip crosses and power plays south of the border with a drug kingpin with a rather morbid fascination with The Beatles , and you are left with a riotous jaunt . And the icing on the cake has got to be Charlize Theron whose vampish character may well set back the me-too movement for generations . Check that , Ms . Theron ’ s character is out for career advancement on her own terms , and the results are hilarious as this modern Mata Hari uses all her feminine charm to create chaos . ●

Celebrating Asian Heritage Month with Alvin Tolentino ’ s Tracing Malong

Artistic Director , choreographer , dancer Alvin Erasga Tolentino of Co . ERASGA is proud to partner with Migrante BC in the dance production of Tracing Malong / Guhit ng Ating Malong in celebration of Asian Heritage Month this May .
Tracing Malong / Guhit ng Malong centres around the malong , the traditional tubelike and intricately printed fabric associated with Mindanao in the southern part of the Philippines . The malong is one of the quintessential icons of Mindanao – the fabric of a hundred uses , from a blanket , a prayer mat , a baby-carrier , a skirt , a head cover , a baby hammock , a fruit basket , a sleeping bag , and so many things .
The malong comes to life in this contemporary , progressive and provocative production choreographed by Alvin Tolentino and told in dance by seven contemporary dancers from the Philippines and Vancouver .
Alvin Tolentino explains , “ The malong which I have been drawn to with my ongoing interest in Asian ancestry through culture and arts is ancient Asian traditional arts ; its legacy is alive in culture and the people . This dance and production represent to me continuity and progress where tradition is active , dynamic and not static .”
Tracing Malong / Guhit ng Malong is a fundraiser to help support the programs of Migrante BC in organizing , educating and empowering Filipino migrants and immigrants .
There are sponsorship opportunities for the fundraiser dance production . Regular tickets are Early bird tickets at $ 25 each and $ 30 each at the door .
