Taiwan and the Philippines shine at TaiwanFest 2018
TaiwanFest 2018 Fete with the Philippines opened on September 1 at the Vancouver Public Library Square in Downtown Vancouver . The event was the first of a threeday festival , now celebrating its 15th year . According to organizer Charlie Wu , this is the first time that Taiwan Fest has involved the Philippines , through the United Filipino Canadian Associations of BC , and it has proved to be a very successful endeavour , especially since it was supported by the Filipino community , and through the efforts of its media partner ReyFort Media . The festival is celebrated in two Canadian cities , Toronto and Vancouver , every year .
TaiwanFest ’ s Wu of ACSEA ( Asian-Canadian Special Events Assoc .) said that there are many similarities between Taiwan and the Philippines , especially in first nations ancestry . “ It ’ s said that the indigenous people of Taiwan ’ s Lanyu island share the same ancestry as those from Bataan Island in the Philippines , and both languages and cultures remain strikingly similar .”
Kicking off the three-day flurry of festivities in style , this year ’ s TAIWANfest Opening Concert returns to the newly renovated Vancouver Art Gallery Plaza featuring an evening featuring the music of Vancouver-based Juno nominee Warren Dean Flandez alongside the award-winning Auba Rukai Children ’ s Choir and the equally talented 13-year-old cellist and classical music fanatic Jamie Chan .
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sent his greetings through a Liberal representative , and members of the BC ’ s NDP party led by MLA Bruce Ralston , MLA Katrina Chen , MLA Jinny Sims , MLA Raj Chauhan and MLA George Chow also attended the event .
A jeepney mock-up was one of the main features of the event . It was set up along Robson street , and the public flocked to it . “ Since Vancouver cannot come to the Philippines to ride the jeepney , we brought the jeepney to Vancouver ,” shares Wu . “ It was great to see such enthusiastic support from the Filipino
