Taiwan and the Philippines share so many connections that are widely acknowledged , but rarely discussed . Did you know that many people from both nations have a great deal of very similar DNA ? How about the shared languages and cultural traditions between some indigenous in both Taiwan and the Philippines ?
This summer , TAIWANfest continues the Dialogues with Asia series in a Fête with the Philippines in downtown Vancouver . From September 1st to 3rd , gather a glimpse of the overlooked and untold stories connecting Taiwan and the Philippines ! From film , fashion , and food to visual arts , crafts , music , performances , and even science – once we begin to delve , we discover that the stories are truly endless , and that the diverse migrant-bolstered societies can also provide valuable lessons to us in Canada .
It is widely accepted that Taiwan was the root of the Austronesian languages and peoples as they migrated throughout Asia , passing through the Philippines and going as far as Oceania and Madagascar . In the Philippines , almost everyone has a complicated bloodline ; with as many as 182 different languages and dialects , multiculturalism is not only a social concept , but a way of life – “ mestizo ”. Yet , in an age where travel around the world has become common and migration an action of individual families rather than entire tribes , can “ mestizo ”

adequately describe the Canada of Today , let alone Tomorrow ?
Sometimes , examining and learning about a different culture will shine an unexpected light on our own . In Taiwan , a group of Philippine migrant workers vaunt their handmade and one-of-a-kind couture before the National Taiwan Museum . Surrounded by paintings and artworks of their compatriots , the gathering never failed to capture the hearts of the Taiwanese . Paving a path of their own in the mainstream , are Mario Subeldia and his group of migrants with a passion any different from us ?
TAIWANfest also offers new perspectives on our heritage and identities in the Hope Talks and Taiwan ’ s Bookstore . DNA scientist and team member of the fabled “ Godmother of Taiwanese Blood ” Dr . Tse-yi Wang reveals the hidden stories in our blood that our ancestors weren ’ t able to pass on ; author and poet Bei Ling recounts his life as an exile , looking to the day he can finally
return home ; spiritualist Ming-Chieh Hsieh recites his escape from death through a newfound connection with his inner self ; and newsman Asuka Lee finds a new lens through which to see his home of Taiwan with Migrant ’ Park .
The Fête with the Philippines is much more than just a party – it is an opportunity to speak , to share , and to learn . Few will reap more from the opportunity than the Auba Rukai Children ’ s Choir from Pintung , Taiwan .
TAIWANfest kicks off in Toronto at Harbourfront Centre from August 24-26 and continues in downtown Vancouver from September 1-3 . For more information , visit www . taiwanfest . ca
