Smooth Operator!
Drugs are everywhere. Perfect timing with the upcoming legalization of
marijuana In Canada comes SuprFly. Taking off where the original 1972 blax-
ploitation film left off, this modern crime tale from Sony hits the mark. Check
out the mean streets of Atlanta at sedate Cineplex theatres around B.C.
A good cast is assembled here by Director X and the atmosphere in this
disco era of excess is spot on. Money flows everywhere and the master of his
domain is a cool cat called Priest. Power needs to be used wisely and Trevor
Jackson fits the role perfectly. No one in the law enforcement community know
who Priest is as he flies under the radar. Thanks to a miscue here and there,
competition from rival dealers and missteps, Priest’s world becomes chaotic.
Always one step ahead of the law and his rivals, it’s always a guess-
ing game as to what this guy will do to maintain control. Oh, and
yes, he’s ever the ladies man. Some steamy sex intercuts the graph-
ic violence in this winner take all approach to control the narcot-
ics world and the strange bedfellows such power players keep.
Exciting at times, SuperFly lacks the “spark” of the original and misses
that film’s masterful theme and songs. Still this film qualifies as a good crime
drama with some exceptional performances especially from Jackson.●

You’re It!
Much of the cinema world will be gravitating to see a large highly hyped
animation movie. If you are sick of waiting in long line-ups and wasting your
time you may like to instead take in Tag. Refreshing and funny this sly comedy is
definitely an adrenalin rush. Take a chance on this wacky bit of escapism cour-
tesy of Warner Brothers now stirring things up at Cineplex Theatres around B.C.
Remember when you were young? Sure, you do. Back in The
day before the dawn of computers and smart phones kids spent their
time in the great outdoors having fun. Maybe tag was the most popu-
lar kids game ever. See five grown men take this juvenile game to new
heights over a period of some 23 years no less. Hard to believe this
movie shows the zany appeal of grown men never having grown up.
Each of this group of men have their own lives. A third boyhood
friend somehow has remained aloof as the one who got away - like the
great white shark - and never been caught. Fate has a way of catching up
with you and Jerry is firmly in the sights of his old-time chums. Smooth
as silk and faster than any speeding bullet is Jeremy Renner who uses
every trick in the book to elude being caught. Out to stop him are so-
called pals Hoagie, Sable, Callahan and Randy. Gifted actors Ed Helms
(The Hangover) , Hannibal Buress, Jon Hamm and Jake Johnson go
through the motions at times with ease in this crazy gotcha escapade.
Female comedy power is supplied by the likes of Leslie Bibb and Isla
Fisher in this obscure joke fest that actually works with good slapstick mo-
ments sprinkled liberally throughout its one hour and forty minute course.
Director Jeff Tomsic is making his feature film debut here and he does
a good job keeping the pacing fast and the energy level high in this Pleasant
farce that is actually inspired by real events.●
