Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz gets AFP recognition
The Armed Forces of
the Philippines on Mon-
day honored Airwoman
1st Class Hidilyn Diaz for
winning
the
country’s
fi rst Olympic medal in 20
years, receiving a plaque
of recognition from AFP
chief General Ricardo Vi-
sayas and the Outstand-
ing Achievement Medal
from Defense Sec. Delfi n
Lorenzana.
The
AFP
awarded
Diaz for her distinguished
service as a Filipino ath-
lete when she won the
silver medal in the 53kg
division of the women’s
weightlifting event in the
Rio Olympics.
“Airwoman
Second
Class Diaz brought na-
tional pride which mer-
ited public recognition of
the highest order of her
accomplishment as the
country’s lone athlete-del-
egate to the said interna-
tional event to win a me-
dal for the Philippines,”
the award read.
Diaz was promoted
to Airwoman 1st Class
last August 18 during her
homecoming
ceremony
with the Philippine Air
Force at the Villamor Air-
base.
Diaz also won gold at
the 2014 Asian Games and
bronze at the 2015 World
Weightlifting
Champion-
ships.
Diaz received P5 mil-
lion pesos in incentives
from the government, as
well as an additional P2M
from Pres. Rodrigo Duterte
during her courtesy call
in Davao City. AirAsia, a
budget airline company, is
also gving her free fl ights
for fi ve years.•

Dream Hoops Academy tryouts in BC
Have
you
ever
dreamed of playing bas-
ketball
in
the
Philip-
pines? This could be your
chance.
Dream Hoops Inter-
national will be putting
together three teams of
local Filipino All-Stars to
compete in Manila in the
summer of 2017. The Phil-
ippine tour will give local
players a chance to com-
pete against elite teams in
the Philippines in front of
collegiate coaches and
pro scouts, while gaining
an invaluable cultural ex-
perience.
This
year,
Dream
Hoops International will
be holding an open tryout
for a Grade 6 & 7 team,
Grade 8 & 9 team and a
Grade 10-12 team. The
tryouts will take place at
St. Patrick’s High School
in Vancouver on Satur-
day, September 10 and
Sunday, September 11.
Tryout times will be an-
nounced.
Registration cost for
tryouts will be $20.00.
Dream Hoops wel-
comes all elite and as-
piring Filipino basketball
players to attend this
tryout.
Only
the
very
elite Fiilipino
players
in
each age group will be se-
lected to the Dream Hoops
International Team.
