Dingdong presents a million signatures
at Climate Change conference in Paris
Actor Dingdong Dantes is
in the City of Lights for the 2015
Paris Climate Conference (2015
COP21).
The 2015 COP21 opened
last Nov. 30 and it aims to pursue
a legally binding and universal
agreement of keeping global
warming below 2°C.
The event will run until
Dec. 11, attended by numerous
global leaders, including French
President Francois Hollande,
US President Barack Obama,
Chinese President Xi Jinping, as
well as Hollywood A-listers like
Leonardo DiCaprio.
Also participating are 25,000
delegates from government,
intergovernmental organizations,
UN agencies, NGOs and civil
society.
In an earlier interview with
PEP, Dantes expressed his desire
to be at the summit to manifest
Filipinos’ support for the effort.
He has brought with him
more than one million signatures
gathered as part of the One
Million Filipino Youth Voices
Campaign spearheaded by the
National Youth Commission
(NYC), which he chairs.
“Magkakaroon ng turnover
ng mga signatures na ’yun sa
President ng France, na siyang
umuupo na president ng COP
(Conference of Parties) 21 this
year. ’Yung pag-turn over ng
signatures ay isang manifestation
ng mga boses ng mga Filipinos,
particularly the Filipino youth na
pumirma roon,” he said.
The original plan was
to gather at least a million
signatures but with 1.2 million
Pinoys pledging their support,
Dantes is more than elated.
“Sila pa lang, ilang milyon na
ang pirma nila. Automatic dagdag
na agad ’yun sa campaign natin,
so malaking bagay…because it
strengthens our position, not just
in number. Kapag nandiyan na
ang larangan ng faith, religion,
mas nagiging personal talaga
(ang endeavor),” he told PEP.
Dantes is a first-time father,
with wife Marian Rivera giving birth
to their daughter Maria Letizia
only last week.
He admitted to actually having
had second thoughts about his
Paris trip, sharing how difficult
it is for him to be away from his
family at this time. However, he
maintained, “Mahalaga rin ang
gagawin ko du’n. Really, kaya ako
mas ginanahang gawin ’yun, para
sa kanyang kinabukasan.”•

He told GMA News, “We
are now more than inspired to
continue the work that we started.
Our hard work has initially paid off
and we are up to the challenge in
breathing life to what was once a
huge task.”
Dantes maintained, however,
the fight is far from over. “Let us all
move fast enough almost on double
time before everything turns from
bad to worse. We cannot wait. The
time to act is now. Our dreams for
us and our children will never be
realized unless we collectively take
the cudgel for a better future.”
Dantes is grateful to the

Philippines (CBCP) for supporting
the campaign.
