Senator Angara’s keynote message discussed the efforts of the government in passing the Philippine Innovation Act which seeks to create a road map for the country that will drive innovation throughout the private and public sectors and help MSMEs take advantage of new technologies. He added that there is a need to cultivate an entire innovation ecosystem so that Filipinos can become pioneers rather than late adapters in terms of significant tech- driven changes. Setting the theme for the second day, Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez gave an inspiring talk on how to rise from adversity, and “doing things afraid.” Discussions on future-proof retail New strategies and trends for retailers to stay in the game were shared and discussed by speakers during the conference. WGSN Insight Asia Pacific Senior Editor Erica Ng and McKinsey and Company Philippine Partner Anders Barlund shared new trends and rules in retail and how malls of the future are shaped by global trends, respectively. Zalora Philippines Co-founder and CEO Paulo Campos and Google Philippines Head of Marketing Gabby Roxas on the other hand focused on the growth opportunities in the Philippine fashion thru e-commerce and omni-channel and how to evolve the physical store through digital transformation. 3RD QUARTER, 2017 PLDT Alpha Vice President and Head Vic Tria shared the redefinition of retail, including the new retail equation that can help retailers win their customers. Globe’s Senior Vice President for Creative Marketing and Multimedia Business Joe Caliro shared the evolving ‘retailtainment’ trends that could cater to the costumers of the future. Branding and music were also discussed as vital ingredients for retailers to connect effectively with their consumers. Springtime Design Limited Managing Director Chris Dingcong talked about the importance of seamless branding in drawing in and engaging the customers to a store or a product, while OPM icon and FILSCAP Vice President Jim Paredes talked about how music can effectively affect store sales and customer’s behavior. Two lively and enlightening panel discussions also took place during the two-day conference with focus on the NEW generation of young and dynamic retailers and how food retailers have evolved to become anchor stores in malls. What’s New? For the first time this year, the conference introduced a Supermarket Track to also give focus on food retailing. Speakers from IGD and Nielsen Philippines shared their insights on new trends and technologies that impact the food retail business. To showcase various technologies that can help retailers, the NRCE Chatbot was introduced. Powered by AlfaFusion, the chatbot provided real time answers to questions on the NRCE event. At the same time, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) and their applications in retail were showcased by ICON. Retailers who went around the expo had a fun time learning about the different exhibitors, while at the same time giving them opportunities to gather more raffle entries using their Stores Asia passport. The second day however, was cut short due to an intensity 6.3-earthquake which was felt in the venue and urged the organizers to evacuate attendees. In a statement, PRA President Santos expressed his apology and explained, “In the interest of greater safety and peace of mind of all, my team and I have decided to cancel the rest of the convention and exhibition that afternoon.” The last two presentations by TLC Solution Managing Director Ms. Susan Grace Rivera and Kantar Philippines CEO Gary De Ocampo will be resumed during the Q3 General Membership Meeting on September 21.
