26 PHILIPPINE ASIAN NEWS TODAY March 16 - 31, 2019 By Alan Samuel Captain Marvel (PG) **** Wonder Woman! Oops. Fear not mighty Disney. Again, the brain trusts at Marvel Studios have come up with a bonafide winner with Captain Marvel. Whole not taking anything away from competing superhero Gal Gadot in the ever-expanding DC Universe this new upstart from the brains of Marvel is complete fun. See it kick butt at Cineplex Cinemas and Landmark Theatres across B.C. Women are important in oh so many levels. Despite making up more than half the world’s population and with millions being kept down and still underpaid by western standards compared to their male counterparts on the big screen super hero dance card their uplifting my time has come presence can’t be (and shouldn’t be) denied. How fitting it is that Marvel releases their newest hero on International Woman’s Day. Beginning with a wonderful send off to Stan (The Man) Lee without whom Marvel comics would have been just a pipe dream Captain Marvel is a breath of fresh air and a completely new and fresh stand-alone entry. Set in the future with lots of back and forth backstory that drives the plot forward here we have two at odds future colonies doing battle against one another. Overtime an unlikely hero emerges. Now as a mature woman Brie Larson is absolutely riveting as a fighter pilot coming to terms with her upbringing as she plays the pivotal part of two warring clans vying for global supremacy. Or something to that effect. Given considerable back-up from the sly grinning of song siren Samuel Jackson (Pulp Fiction) as mercurial Nick Fury and the tutoring of chameleon like Jude Law (Alfie) as a supposed mentor on steroids blinded by rage and ambition Captain Marvel Rocks. Full of seismic special effects, gruesome slimy aliens a la MIB, bits of nostalgia fare and a kick ass babe with a heart of gold and Captain Marvel turns out to be marvellous fun that papa Stan would be rightly proud of. TEST No. 4: GEORGRAPHY & TRAVEL Matteo celebrates birthday with family, girlfriend Sarah Actor Matteo Guidicelli celebrated his birthday with his girlfriend Sarah Geronimo.
