32 PHILIPPINE ASIAN NEWS TODAY February 16 - 28, 2019 Nicole Mojica of Richmond wins jiu-jitsu competition in California Her name is Nicole Mojica, and she is six years old. The Filipino- Canadian won gold in the recent IBJJF Pankids 2019 jiu-jitsu tournament held in Anaheim, California. It is one of the biggest tournaments for kids jiu-jitsu and competitors come from all over the world to show their skills, technique and A game to be named the world champion in their division. Nicole started jiu-jitsu when she was 4 1/2 years old for self defence. Like all other activities, she spent time practicing in the gym and at home as jiu-jitsu needs focus, determination and discipline to do the techniques. Nicole first joined the Jiu-jitsu Ohana tournament in 2017 at the Olympic Oval in Richmond and won her first bronze medal. Since then, Nicole was more determined to be a top competitor. At a young age, she knew the value of hard work and dedication. Nicole saw the first IBJJF Pankids tournament in YouTube while training and noted to us “Dad, my dream is to become a world champion when I grow up.” Little did she know that her dreams will come true faster than she anticipated. Last November, her coaches invited her to join the IBJJF Pankids 2019. Nicole practiced hard with her team leading to the competition. After winning the gold, her points of view was changed and we couldn’t even be prouder. “Dad, it doesn’t matter if you win gold, you try your best in whatever you do.” All together, Nicole has nine golds, four silvers and four bronzes, and she continues to train and guides younger kids at Apex Mix Martial Arts in Richmond. Canlubang will be shooting for yet another title in the 55-and-over division by bringing back the multi- titled Tommy Manotoc, and the Sugar Barons will be contending with perennial rival Luisita in two layouts that are very similar in character. Alta Vista and Club Filipino de Cebu in Danao will be the site of Senior action, with both courses carved out of mountains where precision off the tees and accurate approaches will be the premium. The Barons won coming from behind in Bacolod last year even with Manotoc not in the team for the second straight year because of family commitments in the United States. Manila Southwoods will be shooting to equal an Interclub record fifth Championship Division title in Men’s play starting Mar. 6. Cebu Country Club, that exclusive layout in the heart of the city, and Mactan, an air force layout very near the city’s modern international airport, will be the host clubs for the centerpiece division. The CCC and Mactan are traditional courses, with CCC again to determine the champion owing to its difficulty.
