‘Fantastica’ ends run as Vice Ganda’s
highest-grossing movie
MANILA—After a monthlong
run and a series of international
screenings, the Vice Ganda starrer
“Fantastica” has set a new record
for the comedian’s yearly big-screen
outings.
The 2018 Metro Manila Film
Festival entry is now the “highest
grossing Vice Ganda movie,” co-
producer Star Cinema announced on
Tuesday during a thanksgiving dinner
celebrating the movie’s success.
With its P596-million worldwide
take, “Fantastica” has unseated Vice
Ganda’s previous box-office best,
“Gandarrapiddo:
The
Revenger
Squad,” which totaled P571 million
after its run.
In January 2018, “Gandarrapiddo,”
which saw Vice Ganda as a manga-
inspired superhero, was said to be the
highest grossing Philippine film of all
time.
“The Hows of Us,” starring Kathryn
Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, has since
overtaken that record after becoming
the first Philippine-produced film
to breach the P600-million mark in
terms of ticket sales.
By the end of its run here and
abroad, “The Hows of Us,” also a Star
Cinema production, raked in some
P800 million worldwide.
During
the
“Fantastica”
thanksgiving party, Vice Ganda,
dubbed local showbiz’s “Phenomenal
Box Office Star,” credited the movie’s
success partly to the overwhelming

The carnival-themed adventure
saw Vice Ganda’s first team-up with
Richard Gutierrez and Dingdong
Dantes. It also gathered three popular
love teams — Loisa Andalio and
Ronnie Alonte, Maymay Entrata and
Edward Barber, and Kisses Delavin
and Donny Pangilinan — whose fans
clubs actively promoted “Fantastica”
and even organized several block
screenings.
“Ang lala,” was how Vice Ganda
described the overwhelming support
for the film during his speech, where
he also thanked first-time collaborator
Barry Gonzalez, the director.
“Fantastica,” which led the MMFF
2018 box office tally, factors for more
than half of the total ticket performance
of the annual Christmastime movie
festival. Its organizing committee
previously
announced
it
had
reached its goal of P1-billion gross at
the end of its two-week run.
Present at the thanksgiving
party were executives of ABS-CBN,
including Chairman Mark Lopez,
President and CEO Carlo Katigbak,
and Star Cinema head Olivia
Lamasan, who each congratulated
cast members and the crew behind
“Fantastica” on the movie’s record-
breaking performance. (M. Dumaual,
