Price ceilings mulled for
rice, pork, chicken
The government is “seriously
considering” price ceilings for rice,
pork and chicken as food prices
remain elevated after a typhoon
damaged crop output, Trade
Secretary Ramon Lopez said.
Early data shows farm-
gate prices are already falling
and the government is waiting to
see if traders reduce retail prices
correspondingly, Lopez said in an
interview in London.
If the price reductions
don’t happen and profiteering is
detected, Lopez said he is open to
recommend that President Duterte
impose price limits on food items
which retailers will be required to
comply with, he said. “I am a free-
market proponent,” he said. “But
if profiteering happens, I will have

rising oil prices have led
consumer-price growth to
accelerate to 6.4 percent
in August, compared with

damages to crop output
from Typhoon
“Ompong”
(international
name: Manghut) have ruined
prospects for a quick moderation
in inflation.
In Ilocos Norte, members
of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan
(Provincial Board) unanimously
approved an ordinance prohibiting
the delivery, removal or any act
of transferring rice outside the

Wages based on experience. Plus, gratuities
as chairperson of the Committee
on Agriculture, said the ordinance
is meant to secure the province’s
rice supply after Typhoon Ompong
inflicted damages worth P1.8
billion on rice farms.
To prevent rice shortage and
unstable prices, Ambrosio said
the provincial government has to
exercise its police power to ensure
that palay harvest and stocks are
kept within the province under
the rice procurement program to
benefit both farmer-producers and

consumers.
“The
anti-rice
shortage
ordinance shall take effect
immediately within 120 days after
each calamity, such as a signal
no. 3 typhoon or a 6.0-magnitude
earthquake,” he said.
Anyone found violating the
ordinance shall be ordered to
return the rice products to the
warehouse or stores at his own
expense, he added. (mb.com with
