My Generation ( PG ) *** Mod Squad !

Swinging London takes Centre stage in the rather appealing My Generation . Sir Michael Caine narrates this insightful looks at how a corner of England created a movement that effectively took the world by storm . Get in on all the action at the Vancity Theatre thanks to Red Eye Media
Told in three acts this dynamic film looks at how the younger generation in England in the 1960s broke out of its shell and against all odds set the political establishment on its ear . Interviews with a slew of celebrities and trendsetters gives us a peak into swinging London in the 60s and the impact young artists had on the population as a whole .
Basically My Generation as narrated by Michael Caine himself wisely looks at historical footage of a new youth-oriented movement that took hold and flawlessly uses the famed actor and scenes from his movies as a conduit to explore what this change meant to him and his peers and to society at large .
Great interviews then and now from the likes of Paul McCartney , Vidal Sassoon , Twiggy and many , many more show the zest youth had for change and that essentially a group of working class men and women who had talent were able to break down barriers and do their own thing . As could be expected there were those who opposed this new openness , long hair and freedom for women who enjoyed the ability to wear short skirts . The film also looks at how the government dealt with the new back morality , freedom and the Phenomena of drugs .
Smart and at times provocative for the times My Generation is entertaining and works with Michael Caine at his charming best !

Under the Tree ( PG ) **** Root of Evil !

Quality filmmaking finally returns to the silver screen after months upon months of superhero drivel . Surprisingly it takes a film from Iceland no less to set off shock waves in a Cinderella story likely to be heard come Oscar time . Return to not so sedate Europe to see two families go at it big time in Under the Tree . Prepare to hang your collective heads in Shame as you bear witness to two rivals going at it in a psychological game of brinkmanship . On edge you will be throughout this exceedingly smart thrill now confounding audiences at the Van City Theatre by way of Mongrel Media .
Neighbors can be nice . Or not so nice . The latter type of housemates embark on a slow- building collision course that has you wanting more . Small mundane irritants build upon each other until things spiral out of control . Caught up in all the chaos and carnage are the odd dog and cat and a little girl . You can sense the Inner rage as two battling elderly women run rather Roughshod over their rather hen-pecked and shell-shocked husbands ,
Good intentions go out the window in this brilliantly acted story whose peek into troubled souls scores high on all levels . Even though there are English subtitles which don ’ t get in the way Under the Tree is easily one of the finest films of this , or another year .
