BC now joins Ontario , Alberta and the Territories in providing publicly funded insulin pumps and supplies for those who live with type 1 diabetes ( T1D ) regardless of age .
“ Today ’ s announcement is an important step for the BC government – one that will help British Columbians with T1D to better manage their disease ,” says Dayna Backus , JDRF regional director for BC & Yukon . Backus was on hand for today ’ s announcement by BC health minister ,
PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE : INSIGHTS FOR FILCO-OPERATIVE ONE HOUSING SOCIETY
One hundred twenty years ago . That is how long we have enjoyed and celebrated our day of national freedom . Today , it is but fitting to ask why we must keep on celebrating Philippine Independence Day when we are no longer in the Philippines , and have charted new lives here in Canada . It is high time we reflected on the significance of this day to what we do as an individual , an organization , or a community of Canadian-Filipinos .
For Filco-operative One Housing Society , a newly organized non-profit society from among and by the members of One Filipino Co-operative of BC and registered in 2016 , there are several reasons to celebrate this momentous day . These may serve as the backdrop to , or centrepiece of , the Society ’ s vision , mission , programs and services .
Primarily , Philippine Independence Day commemorates the Filipinos ’ declaration of the exercise of their inherent and inalienable right to freedom ; hence , One Housing Society ’ s vision to become a leading provider of affordable , sustainable , innovative , and inclusive housing solutions to Filipino-Canadians in BC . The housing crisis is stifling our inherent right to meet a basic need – -- a home --- and the freedom to own it and to live peacefully and safely in it without the threat of eviction .
Secondly , it was the day the Philippine flag was officially unfurled and publicly displayed for the first time . For One Housing Society it means the conspicuous demonstration that it ’ s “ Open for Business ” and on the path towards building partnerships , meeting stakeholders ’ expectations , and planning and action formation for its members ’ engagement .
Lastly , the declaration of independence has given way for the Philippines to attain self-government to promote the education of its people as they become part of a bigger , free and civilized world community . This translates to One Housing Society ’ s programs on members ’ education for alternative housing solutions , continuing research , and expanding its network of organizations and agencies that play a critical role in building , owning and managing a co-op housing .
So , must we continue to celebrate Philippine Independence Day in Canada ? The answer is a resounding yes . Unless and until we have reached
BC government to provide insulin pumps to people with type 1 diabetes
Adrian Dix .
Canadians living with T1D must take insulin daily to manage their condition . Some deliver insulin through manual injections while others use insulin pumps . There is a significant and growing body of evidence demonstrating the medical benefits of using insulin pumps to manage T1D , including improved overall glucose control and more time spent in target range , reducing the number of serious related complications including cardiac issues , stroke , blindness , limb amputation and kidney failure . This translates into fewer emergency room visits and an overall reduction
WWW . PHILIPPINEASIANNEWSTODAY . COM our goal in building , owning , operating and managing an affordable cooperative housing for our fellow Filipinos in Canada , then we will continue to celebrate our Independence Day .
We must celebrate , not just with singing and dancing , but with acts that give honor and love to those who fought for , and sought an end to , all forms of denying our inalienable right to be free and to live in a just and equitable society such as we do in Canada .
As our forefathers fought for the freedom and liberty of our Philippine homeland , so must we , as One Housing Society , continue the struggle and campaign for the exercise our right to our affordable , accessible and safe home in Canada , our new country . in the costs of diabetes care .
“ We applaud the BC government for moving to extend public coverage of insulin pumps to all ages , a measure that will improve lives , improve health and ultimately save taxpayer dollars ,” adds Backus . “ The costs of managing this disease are significant to the health care system , and to individuals and families who face numerous out-of-pocket expenses . Today ’ s announcement means better health , including financial health , for people living with this disease .”
The high cost of insulin pumps and pump supplies are a significant barrier to this life-changing technology , especially for those in lower income groups . Extending coverage will particularly benefit young adults in their 20s and 30s who live with T1D . Faced with the costs of education , rent and other expenses , many are not in a position to manage the cost of replacing their pump , which can have a detrimental impact on their health .
Other provinces have programs in place to provide pumps for children and adolescents , but that coverage ends at age 18 , 19 or 25 depending on the province . JDRF hopes the remaining provinces will follow suit and extend coverage in the near future .( dbackus @ jdrf . ca )
IRCC improves the processing of student applications from China , India , Vietnam and the Philippines
Markham , ON – Immigration , Refugees and Citizenship Canada ( IRCC ) is making great strides in promoting Canada as a destination of choice for international students seeking a quality education by finding efficient ways to process applications .
To support the growth in study permit applications , IRCC today announces the Student Direct Stream ( SDS ), which is available to students applying for a study permit from China , India , Vietnam and the Philippines . Students from those countries who demonstrate upfront that they have the financial resources and language skills to succeed academically in Canada will benefit from faster processing times .
Similar programs have been in place in these 4 countries for a few years . We are aligning them together into 1 program to ensure consistency .
We are also working on expanding SDS to Africa and are looking at options in Kenya and Senegal . Expansion to Senegal would be in line with the department ’ s focus to attract more French-speaking students to Canada .
To qualify for SDS , applicants need to meet additional requirements , in particular language levels that are stricter than regular study permit requirements . Students who do not have all of the additional information required for SDS can apply through the regular study permit application process , either online or at a Visa Application Centre .
The SDS complements the Express Entry system as these students will be well placed to continue on the path to permanent residence and Canadian citizenship after completing their studies in Canada , if they wish to .
IRCC is committed to finding ways to improve its International Student Program by making its services faster , easier and more accessible . The success of the SDS program will be evaluated with the intention to expand the program in 2019 . To learn more about SDS , visit the website .
