Marvin Rivera took his oath as a Canadian citizen on January 3 , as part of the first batch of new Canadians who recited the first citizenship oath in 2017 .
Rivera took the oath with his wife Maria and son Andrew .
According to Rivera , it was a great honour .
“ It ’ s like graduating from something to another level ,” Rivera said in a report by Metro in Ottawa .
Rivera and his family came to Canada from the Philippines four years ago .
Rivera said in the Metro report that he said he always wanted to become a Canadian citizen .

Filipinos Among New Canadians Who Took First Citizenship Oath of 2017

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration has warned Filipinos from falling prey to fake jobs in Canada .
The non-existent jobs are said to be offered through e-mail and social media .
Various jobs are offered including farm laborers , fruit pickers , factory workers , medical staff , caregivers , engineers , truck drivers , and office workers .
In a media statement , the POEA said it received a forwarded e-mail from a victim that he was selected for a supposed employment in Canada .
The POEA related that the employer ’ s representatives were said to be already in the Philippines to interview applicants .
The sender of the email promised the person nonpayment of placement and processing fees , but applicants are asked to pay P3,800 for slot reservation .

McCallum said the antiimmigrant rhetoric that has become prominent in the U . S . and other western democracies would not be welcomed in Canada .
