All Souls events honour dead through ceremony and celebration
All Souls returns to the
City of Vancouver’s Mountain
View Cemetery with a series
of events from October 28 to
November 1 that honour the
dead through ceremony and
celebration.
The event gives the public
an opportunity to remember
their dead, whether they are
interred at Mountain View
Cemetery or not, in a quiet
atmosphere of contemplative
beauty. Curated by artists
Paula Jardine and Marina
Szijarto, the week of events
features
music,
film,
discussions, and the chance
to make memorials.
All Souls launches on
October 28 from 6 to 10 pm
at the cemetery’s Celebration
Hall (Fraser Street at East 39th
Avenue). The family-oriented
evening will include music,
warming fires, fragrant teas
and the opportunity to make
personal memorials.

Mountain View Cemetery the
following week includes:
Sunday, October 29
Mourners’ Tea - 3 - 5 pm
A
community
conversation about death and
grieving through personal
experience.
Songs for a Lost Pod
- 7 pm and 8:30 pm (30-
minute
performances),
The Little Chamber Music
Series
presents
Leah
Abramson’s Songs for a
Lost Pod, a song cycle
exploring themes of inter-
species communications,
intergenerational trauma and
grief for a polluted planet.
Monday, October 30 - 8
pm
For Dear Life - A feature
documentary by Carmen
Pollard, chronicling the end
of her cousin James Pollard’s
life and the devotion of his
friends to fulfil his final wishes.
The film will be followed by a
discussion with the filmmaker
and participants.
Tuesday, October 31 - 7:30
– 9 pm
An evening of beautiful
harp music with Janelle
Nadeau offers a quiet refuge
for Halloween.
Wednesday, November 1
- 8 - 9 pm
Music by the East
Vancouver orchestra Balkan
Schmalkan highlights the
closing night procession to
the shrines throughout the
cemetery.
From October 29 to
November 1, Celebration Hall
will also be open nightly from
7-9 pm for memorial making
and tea.

Mountain View Cemetery,
Vancouver’s only cemetery,
opened in 1886. Owned
and operated by the City of
Vancouver, the cemetery is
situated on almost 43 hectares
of land (106 acres) along
Fraser and Prince Edward
Streets between 31st and
43rd Avenues. Renovations
and improvements have
revitalized this important civic
space, providing new facilities
and
interment
options.
